COERR Distributed Supplemental Food and Hygiene Supplies to Detained Immigrants under Quarantine

   There was a COVID-19 outbreak in Bang Kaen Special Detention Center in Bangkok where illegal migrant workers arrested by police and immigration authorities were kept for 14 day quarantine prior to transfer to the main Suan Phlu Immigration Detention Center (IDC).

   On March 11, the COVID 19 infections were found in 9 people. Then COVID 19 active case findings were conducted amongst detainees in both Bang Kaen Special Detention Center and Bangkok Immigration Detention Center.

   รFrom 11 to 22 March 2021, detainees numbering 395 held at quarantine facilities of Bang Khen Special Detention Center had tested positive for Covid-19. There were altogether 1,615 detainees detaining in Bang kaen Special Detention Center and Bangkok Immigration Detention Center.

   At the moment all infected detainees and those with high risk of COVID-19 had been separated from other healthy detainees.

   The COVID-19 infected detainees and those in close contact with COVID-19 patients would be transferred to the field hospital, former Royal Thai Police Sport club’s stadium, for treatment by physicians and nurses from the Police General Hospital. COERR has coordinated with the Immigration Bureau by supporting 100 sets of personal hygiene kits such as toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo and washing powder to detainees at field hospital on 24 March 2021.

   At present both centers stopped accepting new detainees and visits were not permitted at this time. However COERR has been granted permission to distribute food and non-food items to detainees at Suan Phlu immigration detention center such as sweetened mung bean soup on March 23; cleaning supplies i.e. toilet brush, skimmed cleaner, garbage bag on 29 March, 5 and 28 April; personal hygiene kits on 29 April 2021.
